Barbara Pezzanite received her Ph.D. in Psychology from The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, sub-specializing in Biopsychology, Neuropsychology, Animal Behavior, and Behavioral Ecology. She is an Animal Behavior Society Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB). Her dissertation research was conducted in the Canadian Arctic, examining long-term changes in the feeding behavior of Lesser Snow Geese, as well as differences in foraging behavior between Lesser Snow Geese and Ross’s Geese.

After receiving her Ph.D., she accepted a two-year postdoctoral position in the Animal Behavior Center of the ASPCA in New York City, where she consulted with companion animal owners on their dog or cat's problematic behavior, conducted behavior modification on shelter animals, supervised the Animal Behavior Center’s telephone-based behavior helpline, educated and counseled ASPCA volunteers and staff on how to work with the shelter animals, met with adopters to advise them on how to care for their new pet, and co-headed two feral cat socialization seminars for rescuers and the general public.
